There are new concerns about water quality and shellfishing after a part of Cold Spring Harbor tested positive for a new algae bloom.

The DEC says the algae bloom was discovered in an area in the harbor that is not certified for shellfishing. They say it’s been closed year-round for more than a decade.

The DEC says people should not eat any shellfish taken from that part of the harbor.

Environmental activist Adrienne Esposito says the bloom is concerning.

“We have more and more waters here on Long Island that are becoming uncertified to our clammers, oystermen and shellfishing industry - that's the really the problem. The harmful algal blooms can put people out of work, they can make people sick and we need to be proactive with preventing them but also finding them,” says Esposito.
