The Cleary School for the Deaf in Nesconset says it is in desperate need of a playground on its school grounds.
Dr. Jacqueline Simms says the school, which has been operational since 1925, has applied for grants for a new playground after all three of its old ones were deemed unsafe.
She says that a new playground would cost between $150,000 and $200,000. School officials say they want to focus on rebuilding at least one of the playgrounds.
More than 100 hearing-impaired students attend the state-funded school. They come from over 36 school districts throughout Long Island.
"We want (students) to have the same playgrounds as they would in their school district, in their neighborhood," says Dr. Simms. "We are just looking for support from our communities."
A GoFundMe page has been set up for people who would like to donate toward a new playground.
