Clarkstown Town Councilman Peter Bradley is facing backlash after posting a controversial comment on Facebook days after the mass shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue.
The post reads in part: "Normal Jews and non-Jews alike were grieving at the JCC while they were meeting ‘the guy with the checkbook.’”
Bradley tells News 12 that the comments started after a political post about Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Facebook.
"We were three days out of Pittsburgh and the behavior of mourning was more appropriate at the JCC vigil, as opposed to having the governor in the village of New Square politicking,” he said.
The post was flooded with comments, with many people outraged by his words.
"Clearly when I wrote the word normal Jews, I intended it one way and it was interpreted another way and for that as I put on my Facebook post the following day - I'm deeply apologetic and regretful. Perhaps it was recommended to me to use the word mainstream in the future,” he said.
Bradley says his apology has been accepted by many, but others are still not convinced.
Gary Siepser, the CEO of Jewish Federation & Foundation, admits Bradley's post was not well thought out. but he is open to forgiveness.
Bradley says he plans to show respect to all of Rockland County.
"Obviously, this is a learning experience for me that I'm going to take and move forward with,” he says.
The Clarkstown supervisor spoke about Bradley's comments on his Facebook page. George Hoehmann called his words insensitive and absolutely unnecessary, and not representative of the Town of Clarkstown.
