The city's Department of Health has launched a new HIV prevention campaign with the help of Montefiore Medical Center. Officials announced the PrEP and PEP campaign at the Bronx hospital Monday.

The city's Department of Health has launched a new HIV prevention campaign with the help of Montefiore Medical Center.
Officials announced the PrEP and PEP campaign at the Bronx hospital Monday.
According to the DOH website, PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, is a daily pill that can prevent HIV infection for those at the greatest risk or those worried about being infected.
PEP, or post-exposure prophylaxis, is an emergency medication that can be taken directly after being exposed to HIV. That pill is taken for 28 days.
Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., who helped organize the event, says these campaigns are necessary to keep everyone in the community safe and healthy.
The DOH says around 600 primary care and infectious disease practices around the city will receive the new HIV kits as part of the campaign.
