City Council holds hearing on NYCHA lighting conditions
The City Council held a hearing Tuesday to examine lighting conditions in NYCHA complexes.
The hearing comes after 28-year-old Akai Gurley was shot and killed by a police officer doing a vertical patrol in a dimly lit stairwell last month in the Pink Houses.
NYCHA repaired the broken lights the following day, but residents say it is still a major problem.
NYCHA officials say lighting issues actually make up less than 1 percent of the work orders they receive. They say on average, it takes them less than 10 days to repair something.
However, residents who live in the Pink Houses say that has not been their experience. One resident says she asked for her apartment to be painted in October. She says the work is scheduled to be done on April 29, 2015.
NYCHA Chairwoman Shola Olatoye says she recognizes the tenants' frustrations, but says that they don't have the $18 billion they need to fix everything. "A generation of federal disinvestment forces NYCHA to continually make tough decisions about how our limited resources are used," she says.
