Central Islip to crack down on marijuana, tobacco use inside high school
Central Islip School District officials say they are stepping up efforts to prevent suspected marijuana and cigarette use on school grounds.
The crackdown comes after school officials say a parent and a grandparent of students brought up the issue at a school board meeting Monday. They told the board that their kids came home complaining about the smell of marijuana in their high school classrooms.
Superintendent Craig Carr says he's asked the high school principal to investigate reports of pot smoking inside the school. Carr says that if a student "appears to be under the influence, the parents will be notified and the student will be searched."
Tobacco, as well as e-cigarettes, is currently banned on school property.
