Health officials say there has been a spike in a “polio-like” illness that starts as a cold, leads to paralysis and targets young children.

The Centers for Disease Control says it has 62 confirmed cases in 22 states, including New York, with several reported cases on Long Island.

The average age of the patients is 4 years old. At least 65 other cases are being investigated.

The illness, known as AFM, causes muscle weakness or paralysis in children. Health officials have not determined where the illness is coming from or how it's transmitted.
