Police say a cache of weapons has been found inside a van that was stopped at the Holland Tunnel in Jersey City.
Three Pennsylvania residents in the van were taken into custody: 50-year-old John F. Cramsey, of Zionsville; 53-year-old Dean S. Smith, of Zionsville; and 29-year-old Kimberly Arendt, of Leighton.
They have been charged with possession of a weapon (a shotgun); transporting a weapon; possession of high-capacity magazines; transportation of high-capacity magazines; criminal possession of marijuana under 50 grams; possession of paraphernalia (a marijuana pipe); and possession of three prescription tablets labeled "legend."
Joe Pentangelo with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police says officers stopped the Dodge Durango on Tuesday around 8 a.m. for a cracked windshield.
A subsequent search uncovered multiple weapons in the vehicle, including two rifles, five pistols, and four knives. Some of the guns were loaded. One of the guns was reportedly on a seat and visible to a Port Authority officer. Police also found ballistic vests, a couple thousand rounds of ammunition, and a military-grade helmet. Further details about the vehicle's contents weren't immediately disclosed.
Pentangelo says that at this time officials do not believe the incident is terrorism-related. However, the Joint Terrorism Task Force is investigating.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
