Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine says he plans to enforce and strengthen the existing town code against illegal signage.
In many towns across Long Island, including Brookhaven, election signs, advertisement signs and signs for junk are illegal. Romaine says those who violate the town code could face a $250 fine.
"No one has the right to put a sign on the public right of way," said Romaine.
Romaine says there will now be a part-time town employee who will drive throughout the town in search of illegal signs and remove them.
Most people News 12 spoke with were happy with the plan. Others said they rely on some of those signs to drum up business.
Romaine says even signs put up on private property must meet certain requirements. The supervisor says he will be writing to all political leaders to reinforce the code.
A public hearing will be held on the new measures at the end of the month.
