Bronx residents gathered at Saint Raymond?s Church in Castle Hill to mark the one-year anniversary of the death of Pope John Paul II. He has been referred to as the people?s pope. Many in the Bronx echoed that sentiment Sunday. Parishioners told News 12 The Bronx they felt lucky to have him as a Pope because he understood people and cared about the world. In Rome, thousands of people filled St. Peter?s Square to hear Pope Benedict deliver a special blessing for Pope John Paul II. Bells will toll in his native Poland to mark the exact time of his death.
