Bronx boxing gym El Maestro Inc. is sending donations to Puerto Rico following a series of earthquakes.

Volunteers collected 40,000 pounds of donated goods for families in need. Donations include canned goods, medical supplies, hygiene products and sleeping bags.

Hector Laspina from El Maestro Inc. said that his organization, which also does cultural programs for the community, stepped up after Hurricane Maria hit the island of Puerto Rico in 2017.

Years later, his family and the families of volunteers are now experiencing another natural disaster after earthquakes started hitting the island during late December, including a 6.4 magnitude earthquake on Jan. 7.

Laspina said that partners of El Maestro Inc. in Puerto Rico ensure the donated goods get to the communities that need them.

“Our goal is to make sure we get it to the people, to those in need and administer it and be transparent at all times,” Laspina said.

Help even came from across the city, as Lexington School for the Deaf from Queens also donated goods.

The donations are expected to arrive in Puerto Rico in about two weeks.
