Educating Bronx youth about New York's Safe Haven Law topped the agenda Thursday at the borough president's meeting.

Borough President Adolfo Carrion Jr. wants the city to work with nonprofit agencies to stop the abandonment of newborns. Carrion believes the city should teach sex education sooner in classrooms. He also wants a new city agency to specifically address the issue and fund community groups to work with teens. Timothy Jaccard, who wrote the city's Safe Haven Law in 1998, attended the meeting and shared Carrion's point of view.

The Department of Education is introducing a pilot program in the fall to deal with the problem and other issues facing Bronx youth. Records show the borough has the highest rate of teen pregnancies.
