A broken elevator at a Freeport apartment complex for seniors has stranded some residents since last week.
Most of the residents at Peternana Terrace are handicapped and have been forced to use the stairs or have been stranded in their rooms since June 21.
A daughter of a resident told News 12 that her mother's medical appointment had to be rescheduled due to the ongoing issue.
"She feels like she has been trapped in her room forever," said Nancy Geyer of her 87-year-old mother.
Peternana Terrace is managed by Stanan Management Corp., which has added extra security to the building to help residents on the stairwell. They say they have also added aides who have been running small errands for residents who cannot get down the steps.
Elevator repair crews were at the complex Tuesday, but could not say when the problem would be fixed.
Catholic Charities owns the building and said in a statement to News 12 that "We're doing everything possible to expedite these repairs as quickly as possible and to make sure our residents feel comfortable and safe."
Catholic Charities says the elevator was meticulously maintained and passed all inspections before the outage.
