A Brentwood woman says she feared for the worst after she was unable to reach her mother, Juana, who lives in Puerto Rico following a 6.4-magnitude earthquake Tuesday morning.

Ana Crespo says as she monitored the reports of the destruction, her mother eventually called back. She says her mother told her the earthquake shook the house and made booming sounds while she held onto a bed.

Crespo says after Hurricane Maria devastated the U.S. territory in 2017, the island never recovered. Her mother says Puerto Rico is ill-equipped to handle the fallout from another natural disaster.

Crespo says her mother and others are focusing on self-reliance. Her mother lived in Brentwood for 30 years, but retired to Puerto Rico.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says he's sent a team from the New York Power Authority to Puerto Rico to assist with recovery efforts.

He says the crews will work to stabilize the island's power grid and prevent outages.
