Brentwood holds community forum in wake of teen killings
The Brentwood Union Free School District held a special forum Tuesday night to discuss what is being done to keep the school safe in the wake of two teen killings last week.
Police officials say they believe the brutal beatings of Nisa Mickens, 15, and Kayla Cuevas, 16, were gang-related.
School officials say safety measures being taken include requiring staff and students to wear IDs, keeping school doors locked at all times and banning students from wearing gang symbols on schools grounds.
Brentwood Schools Superintendent Levi McIntyre says the school has also brought back metal detectors and hand wands in an effort to keep prohibited items off school grounds.
"We have asked the Suffolk County Police Department to work with us, and they have provided us with additional security at all of our campuses," McIntyre says. "That should reassure parents that we're doing everything we can to make sure our students are safe."
Suffolk Police Commissioner Timothy Sini has pledged to the community to eradicate gangs in Brentwood. County Executive Steve Bellone says Suffolk will be investing hundreds of thousands of dollars in gang-prevention programs for students.
During the meeting, police also asked the public for help in finding those responsible for killing the girls. Suffolk Crime Stoppers is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Anyone with information can call 1-800-220-TIPS.
