WOODBURY - The Boy Scouts of America announced today that it is considering changing its long-standing policy on barring homosexuals from being scouts or troop leaders.

In a statement, the Texas-based organization said, "This would mean there would no longer be any national policy regarding sexual orientation, but that the chartered organizations that oversee and deliver scouting would accept membership and select leaders consistent with their organization's mission, principles or religious beliefs."

Some see the move as a possible victory for gay rights, but others say while they support the idea of gay scouts being allowed to be members, they oppose the idea of gay troop leaders, citing the need to protect young boys from sexual predators.

So far, the Boy Scouts have not given a time frame as to when they may adopt the new policy.
