Bloomberg prepares NYC for population surge
Mayor Bloomberg will unveil his plans Sunday to prepare New York City for its massive population increases through the year 2030.A 2006 study by New York City?s Department of City Planning estimates that the already crowded city?s population will be at 9.1 million in 13 years. Bloomberg is slated to announce what the city will do in regards to topics such as traffic, housing, pollution and mass transit. One controversial idea Bloomberg is expected to talk about is a policy that would introduce charges for commuters entering the busier sections of Manhattan. Other policies likely to be addressed include financial incentives for contractors who build energy efficient homes, an increase in affordable housing and the construction of a rail tunnel under the Hudson River to Midtown. Bloomberg?s announcement falls on Earth Day as he is anticipated to discuss how his plans will not be a strain on the environment and natural resources.
