A Yankee icon who could soon be headed to the Baseball Hall of Fame may get another honor in the Bronx.
Carry Goodman, executive director of the 161st Business Improvement District, says he is starting a petition drive to rename East 161st Street outside Yankee Stadium Jeter Street, after all-time great Derek Jeter.
If the renaming does come to fruition, Jeter Street would intersect Rivera Avenue, which was renamed in honor of Mariano Rivera.
"It will be the No. 1 intersection in sports, as teammates intersect as streets forever here in the Bronx, says Goodman.
The announcement of the new Baseball Hall of Fame class comes next week, and Jeter is pretty much assured to make it.
Goodman has not put in a formal request to the City Council to make the co-naming a reality, but he has plans to try and push legislation by March.
Councilmembers Vanessa Gibson and Diana Ayala released a joint statement, reading in part, "We support any positive recognition of our borough and the neighborhoods that we represent, and we also recognize the importance of Derek Jeter and the Yankees to the Bronx. However, co-naming a street through the legislative process requires the involvement of the City Council, the Community Board and a representative for the person being recognized ... our offices will consider any future street co-naming that is properly brought to our attention."
