A Bronx native is showing off her acting skills in a one-woman, off-Broadway play that she wrote.
"They Call Me Q" was written by 33-year-old Qurrat Ann Kadwani, who was born in Bombay, India and moved to the Bronx when she was 3. Her love of acting came in high school, but she decided to take her skills one step further two years ago by writing a play.
Kadwani is the first South Asian to have an off-Broadway show. In the hourlong play, she acts out the struggles that she went through growing up in the Bronx. Kadwani plays 13 different characters, from her Indian parents to her classmates and friends that were of Puerto Rican and African descent.
She says the title of the play came from people never being able to pronounce her name when she was growing up.
"They Call Me Q" has been off-Broadway since last month at Saint Luke's Theater in Manhattan.
