Bayville Mayor Paul Rupp told News 12 that he makes no apologies for his recent comments on Facebook that bashed some residents of his town.
The incident began after a Nassau County water restriction was posted on a Bayville political page. It reminded residents that they were not allowed to use hoses to clean off their driveways. When a resident asked why the restriction was in place, the mayor responded in part by saying, "All you people need to get a life a real life! Typical Bayville!! Complain about everything! What can I get away with this time without getting caught!"
During the exchange, he also commented, "Inmates trying to run the asylum and do whatever they want and whenever they want."
Some residents who spoke with News 12 Long Island said that Rupp's responses were inappropriate.
"I'm direct and I'm going to tell you what's on my mind, straight to the point," he told News 12. "Some people like it, some people don't. But I can guarantee you for the last three years since I took over office, a lot of residents are happy with the performance."
Many Bayville residents and colleagues say despite his rough approach on social media, they are happy with the mayor's work ethic.
"I think sometimes it gets misconstrued. He's a very passionate guy so if someone has a different view then him it might not come off in the most PR way," Tim Charon, a Village of Bayville trustee.
