A group of Bay Ridge residents is suing the city Sanitation Department over changes to trash pickup on their four dead-end blocks.
"A lot of people in here, you know, there's other people with disabilities," says Kathleen Ryan, one of the residents, who says she walks down the block three times a day on garbage days to get rid of her trash.
The group says that the homes were built on Lafayette Walk, Barwell Terrace, Hamilton Walk and Wogan Terrace in 1925, and trash pickup had never been an issue before.
That was until earlier this year, when DSNY notified residents that its workers would change their routines amid unspecified safety concerns. So crews no longer come in with a small garbage truck to pick up trash, Ryan says.
"I have elderly neighbors in the back," says Margaret McLaughlin, another neighbor. "Actually there's quite a few that bring their garbage out in shopping carts."
All the way down to the next intersection, irking neighbors who live there.
"Thirty-two houses of garbage going out into the sidewalk," says Joe Sokoloski. "Now we were assured we would not be liable for these people's garbage, but yet this week my neighbor -- who isn't even in her house, is in assisted living -- had garbage left the day after pickup. And she's received a $100 summons."
The DSNY declined to comment and instead referred News 12 to the city Law Department.
