After nearly half a year of construction, the Bay Ridge Avenue subway station reopened to commuters Friday morning.
The station had shut down in April.
The station now features new lighting, improved signage, better cell service, USB charging stations and a real-time navigation system.
"It really simplifies my commute to Manhattan to my art school, and it makes it a lot faster so I can get a bit more sleep in the morning, which is good," said commuter Michael Weiss.
Some protested the lack of an elevator at the station.
”You are slapping in the face people with disabilities young mothers with babies and the elderly this community has just lost yet again another way to travel because the MTA decided that they didn't want to put an elevator in the station," said Dustin Jones.
MTA officials say this location couldn’t be made accessible because of its layout but they say they’re happy to announce that new funding means four stations along the 4th Avenue R line will be Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant.
“We are also going to have ADA accessibility for people with disabilities subway station on 59th St. by next year and hopefully we are going to see another one open on 77th Street and 85th Street in Bay ridge," said state Assemblyman Felix Ortiz.
