A Lake Grove man who found human remains in his basement is hoping they will lead to answers about his missing father.
For nearly six decades, the unassuming home on Olive Street held a secret. And now, Michael Carroll may have unlocked the mystery of what happened to his father, George.
"I have a messed up basement, but I am really glad we found what we found," he says.
On Tuesday night, Carroll's sons discovered skeletal remains under the basement. The family believes the remains could be from George Carroll, who went missing in 1961 after serving in Korea. Michael says the story his mother told about his father's disappearance always bothered him. So he looked and hired researchers, psychics and paranormal investigators.
But it was a company with ground-penetrating radar that indicated something may be under the concrete basement floor. After years of looking and digging, about 5 feet down, they found some bones and called Suffolk police, who are now investigating.
As for whether George's wife Dorothy Carroll knew something, the children won't speculate. But they do say their mother died in 1998.
"I think my mom was trying to protect us as young kids," says brother Steven Carroll.
If the DNA test results on the remains indicate that it is George Carroll, the family says it will bring them some closure and allow them to finally bury the Korean War veteran with honors.
The family says it could take a few weeks to get back the DNA results.
