Authorities have released more video of the arrest of Ahmad Rahimi – a man convicted of planting bombs in Manhattan and accused of planting bombs in Seaside.
Rahimi was arrested in September 2016 in Linden after allegedly getting into a shootout with police officers. Body camera video from that arrest was played during the trial Thursday.
The footage shows an officer approaching Rahimi, who was sleeping in the doorway of a Linden bar. He told the officer that he was not carrying identification and that he was homeless. He is also heard saying that he used to live in Perth Amboy, but lost his job and couldn’t pay rent.
Rahimi can then be seen reaching into his jacket and the officer telling him to keep his hands away from his pocket. Gunfire was then exchanged.
The officer is heard yelling that Rahimi has a gun. Rahimi runs away as the officer begins to chase him.
Investigators say Rahimi had a 9-millimeter handgun and 40 rounds of ammunition. They say that he fired on police 20 times as they tried to arrest him, all while running down the street. The defense argues that Rahimi was firing on police out of fear.
Rahimi is on trial for several charges, including the attempted murder of a police officer.
Rahimi is already serving two life sentences for planting a bomb in the Chelsea section of New York City. The blast injured 30 people. A jury convicted him in that case last year.
He is also accused of planning a bomb in a trash can along the Seaside Semper Five Marine charity race route, as well as a bomb in Elizabeth. The bomb in Seaside went off before the race began and no one was hurt. Police officers were able to disarm the Elizabeth bomb.
The trial stemming from the charges filed in Rahimi’s arrest is expected to last several weeks.
Federal charges filed against Rahimi for the New Jersey bombs are still pending, according to the Department of Justice.
