Attorney: Nassau carjacking suspect is the 'wrong man'
The attorney for the man accused of shoplifting at an East Rockaway CVS and the carjacking of a woman in her driveway says police have the wrong man in custody.
David Melis, 59, was arrested Friday and had an appearance in court Tuesday. Police say the suspect was trying to escape from the Ocean Avenue pharmacy after stealing razor blades. The suspected shoplifter then carjacked a 23-year-old woman's vehicle in her driveway. He allegedly crashed into a parked car and sped off, driving over the woman's front lawn.
The victim's neighbor says her husband and father-in-law tried to stop the carjacking. She says both men picked Melis out of a photo lineup.
Melis' attorney says his client was in Suffolk County around the time of the crime and could not have been the suspect. The attorney told News 12 that he has surveillance video to prove his claim.
Both Nassau County police and CVS would not release the surveillance video that shows the robbery suspect. News 12 also put in a request to see the surveillance video that Melis' attorney says proves he was in Suffolk Court.
Melis is scheduled to be back in court in May.
