App pairs blind, low-vision users with sighted volunteers
A free app called Be My Eyes pairs blind or low-vision people with sighted volunteers around the world.
Blind since birth, Krista Giannak doesn't let her lack of sight slow her down, but she says there can be challenges. She says the app has helped her grow her public relations business and with everyday tasks.
"Be My Eyes is like having a sighted friend in my pocket," Giannak says.
Through a smartphone's camera, volunteer Ursla Porter can help identify things wherever a user is, like in a store. Or in Krista's case, what's on a business card she just got.
Volunteers like Porter say using the app doesn't take too much time at all. In fact, she says she's been using it for about two months now and only received six calls for help.
Be My Eyes has over 2 million volunteers helping users live more independently. It works on both iOS and Android phones and is available in more than 150 countries.
