Amtrak investigates service disruption in Hudson River tunnels
Amtrak officials are conducting an investigation into an incident involving two New Jersey Transit trains inside the Hudson River tunnels last week.
Two NJ Transit trains were disabled Friday, stranding more than 1,000 travelers for more than an hour. The crew of an inbound train reported a piece of equipment that connects the train to the overhead wires pierced the roof of one of the train cars. No injuries were reported.
Service was disrupted for about nine hours following the incident.
Gov. Phil Murphy says that he is awaiting the results of the investigation.
"The status of the investigation is ongoing so Amtrak and the feds are still trying to figure out what the heck happened,” the governor said. “There were 1,600 people stranded. They have every right to be incredibly upset about that."
Murphy and other state leaders are pushing for federal funds to build a new rail tunnel. The Hudson River tunnels are over 100 years old.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
