A professional sailor and America’s Cup champion told News 12 he is lucky to be alive after being the victim of a hit-and-run crash in Shoreham.
Wally Henry has a concussion and injured shoulder and neck, but considers himself lucky to be alive. The America's Cup winner told News 12 from his hospital bed that he was side-swiped by a vehicle while riding his bike on Route 25A.
He said he believes it was a larger vehicle that struck him.
“I think I was 10 percent away from getting killed…Fortunately I was wearing a good helmet,” he said.
Wally Henry's wife said she got a call just before 5 p.m. Saturday that her husband was found unconscious on the shoulder of 25A near the sod farm off Miller Avenue.
“The police were there and told me no one had stopped as an eyewitness, but someone stopped when they saw him on the ground,” said Beth Henry.
Officially, the initial Suffolk police report indicates Henry may have "fallen off" his bike. Henry and his wife said that's not possible.
“The bike computer shows he was only riding 16 to 17 mph,” said Beth Henry. “We are looking for someone who may have witnessed this. It's a busy road and surely somebody must've seen what happened.”
Wally Henry says he will probably not be able to participate in sailing events he had scheduled in the upcoming weeks.
“That hurts. Not only hurts me, but the teams that are expecting me to be there. I need to heal up quickly and get back to doing what I do,” he said.
Anyone who may have witnessed Wally Henry’s crash is urged to reach out to Beth Henry on social media, or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
