Affordable-housing option on the way in Bedford Park
Some low-income Bronx families will have a new place to call home this spring.
A new apartment building in Bedford Park, built with the help of the Community Preservation Corporation and the city, will offer 11 affordable apartments to low-income residents.
The building, located on 27-32 Marion Ave., will house a total of 32 apartments. Four of them will be available to families earning up to $35,000 a year. Another seven will be reserved for families earning under $42,500.
Imaculee Harushimana, a Bronx mother and teacher, is excited about the prospect of moving out of the cramped one-bedroom apartment she shares with her two teenage sons and into a bigger space.
"Not having privacy and not allowing my children privacy is tough," said Harushimana.
City officials also expressed excitement over the new building.
"This is about Bronxites getting together and saying we want our borough to really shine and we're going to work very hard to rebuild the Bronx," said Earl Brown, the Bronx deputy borough president.
