A community activist is making an effort to help keep Bronx teens safe following a deadly start to the summer.
According to police, the young lives lost include a 17-year-old who was shot and killed at a house party in Wakefield, which also left a teenage girl with a gunshot wound to the leg.
Two 13-year-old boys also passed away after being pulled from the Bronx River Friday. A 14-year-old was fatally stabbed last week, allegedly by a peer outside their school.
Carlos Baez says there have been several other recent tragedies that have not been well publicized, including a 17-year-old fatally shot on 187th Street in Belmont and another teen killed nearby on 181st Street.
Baez is now working to start a mentoring program for youths, and is spreading the word about several free programs geared toward keeping kids out of trouble. He adds that parents need to make sure they have an active role in keeping their children off the streets.
