Accountant pleads guilty to stealing from clients
A former Seaford accountant pleaded guilty Tuesday to stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from his clients.
Scott Meyer pleaded guilty to 24 counts, including grand larceny.
Meyer faces five to 15 years behind bars for stealing $31,000 from Knob Hill Condominiums in Ronkonkoma, plus $427,000 from the Huntington Rural Cemetery. He also stole nearly as much from two other older men he worked for.
Meyer's attorney blames the thefts on a gambling addiction caused by a lesion in Meyer's brain. He also said that his client would like to pay back his victims.
"When he gets out of jail and he has the ability to make money, he's indicated that he would be more than willing to try and make restitution to these victims," said David Blesso.
Meyer also pleaded guilty in federal court in 2008 to misappropriation of insurance funds. He was given probation and his state CPA license was suspended for six months.
Meyer will be sentenced on June 5. He is currently free on bond.
