AAA hosted its Teen Safety Summit on Monday at Adelphi University, where dozens of teenage drivers were presented with sobering statistics.
According to AAA, 8,000 crashes involving teen drivers happen on Long Island every year.
The agency says the majority of those accidents happen during the summer.
Alcohol is the deadliest factor, they added.
Experts believe distracted driving is also a huge problem.
“Of course, cellphones are up there, but actually, teen passengers are the biggest distraction in teen driver crashes,” said AAA Northeast spokesperson Alex Slatky.
The Suffolk district attorney, Nassau police and trauma experts from Stony Brook University Hospital also spoke at Wednesday’s event.
