AAA is sending a warning to drivers to be on the lookout for deer.
Fall is the season when the most deer collisions occur, especially on the East End. October through December are the worst months for deer strikes, specifically.
Fall is mating season for deer, and experts say they are known to make unpredictable moves on roadways.
A study by AAA Northeast found that during those three months, there were more than 9,700 strikes across New York in 2016.
AAA is urging drivers to be alert, especially at night. The study found deer crashes were most common from 5 to 7 p.m.
To avoid hitting a deer, AAA also suggests scanning shoulders of the road in front of a driver's view because deer may dash out from wooded areas. They also suggest obeying speed limits to allow for more reaction time.
