A new $90 million residential drug treatment and research center is being built in Calverton.

The project is the brainchild of Andrew Drazan, who says his mother struggled with alcohol and drug addiction when he was a child. She died of an overdose when he was 9.

“It brings a lot of hope to me and to a lot of people who are suffering with this, and we're going to do great things for people,” Drazan told News 12. “I'm going to transform addiction care and research."

Northwell Health will lead a team of researchers on the site. Doctors say that is unusual for a treatment center, but it will better help them study the disease of addiction.

The plan calls for 80 beds, as well as an auditorium for school programs and a wellness center.

The new facility will be made up of six buildings and is expected to open by the end of next year.
