5-year-old Iraqi boy injured in blast adopted by uncle on LI

MINEOLA - A 5-year-old Iraqi boy severely injured in a car bomb attack has a new chance at life on Long Island.

The boy, Zeenabdeen Hadi, was only 11 months old at the time of the explosion, losing his jaw, teeth, lips and nose. Soon thereafter, Hasan Khazaal, the boy's uncle, took him to the United States for medical treatment, which has included 35 surgeries.

"I sacrificed my life to save him," says Khazaal. "I risked everything for him."

Khazaal officially adopted his nephew earlier today. Rachel Paras, an attorney who helped facilitate the case, says she is thrilled for the boy and adds that residents in Floral Park, where they've been living, have been extremely supportive of the family's efforts.
