Three police officers who have been credited with preventing further bloodshed during last month's attack on a kosher market in Jersey City were promoted for their heroism.
Mayor Steven Fulop appointed Officers Kendric Jackson, Mariela Fernandez and Raymond Sanchez to the rank of detective at a ceremony at City Hall on Wednesday. Sanchez and Fernandez were among the first to respond after David Anderson and Francine Graham stormed the market and killed three people in an anti-Semitic attack, and they suffered injuries.
Anderson and Graham died after a lengthy shootout with police.
Jersey City Detective Joseph Seals died in a shootout with the suspects prior to the attack on the grocery store. He was mentioned during the promotion ceremony.
"Detective Joe Seals encountered danger Dec. 10 and lost his life, rest his soul, protecting and serving. Kendric, Mariella and Ray - they ran into danger on Dec. 10 to protect and serve - not to die. They were prepared to give their lives to protect all of us. Not because their oath says so, but because of their courage and valor,” said Jersey City Police Chief Mike Kelly.
At the time the gunfire began, the three officers were working on assigned posts nearby and ran toward the gunfire when they heard it inside the store. Officials noted that once more Jersey City police officers arrived on the scene, there were no further civilian injuries.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
