Three Con Edison workers were rescued Thursday morning after getting trapped inside an elevator shaft at East 132nd Street for more than four hours.

According to fire officials, the workers were riding down to a subterranean utility tunnel when the elevator malfunctioned at around 7:00 a.m., leaving the workers stuck 110 feet underground.

Firefighters arrived on the scene at 8:30 a.m., armed with ropes and ladders, and descended to the spot where the Con Edison crew got trapped. Above ground, firefighters attached a pulley to a concrete post to secure the elevator car. Once everything was in place, they were able to extract the workers one at a time.

All three workers were taken to Jacobi Medical Center for evaluations, but a fire marshal says they did not appear to sustain any serious injuries.
