The second group of men charged with Lesandro "Junior" Guzman-Feliz's death are awaiting their day in court, just days after five Trinitarios were convicted of murdering him.
Prosecutor Morgan Dolan says she is willing to negotiate potential plea deals for eight men charged in the killing. A jury convicted five gang members of first-degree murder on Friday, nearly one year after Junior's death.
Only one of the eight defendants facing second-degree murder and other charges appeared in court Monday. Seven of the defendants, including suspected gang leader Diego Suero, waived their appearance in court Monday.
Dolan said she is "willing to consider a manslaughter in the first degree resolution" for the eight defendants.
Kevin Alvarez was originally the ninth defendant, but he accepted a deal, pleading guilty to manslaughter in the first degree. He agreed to provide truthful testimony in the trial in exchange for only "time served" on the conspiracy charge.
Michael "Sosa" Reyes, who was also seen on camera the night Junior was killed, also entered a guilty plea on manslaughter charge, agreeing to testify for the chance his case would be dropped.
The second group of defendants is scheduled to return to court in September to move forward with their trial if they do not agree to plead guilty to manslaughter in the first degree, which carries a maximum sentence of up to 25 years in prison.
