2nd annual Flotilla event raises awareness for water protection
A Stamford-based organization held its second annual Flotilla event Saturday in an effort to educate residents about the Long Island Sound and the importance of protecting it.
SoundWaters, a nonprofit that aims to protect the sound through education, is encouraging people to do research and make an effort to protect one of the most valuable resources – the water.
Members of the group paddled four to five miles from Cove Island Park to the Stamford harbor at Boccuzzi Park – all while raising money and spreading awareness.
Among the supporters and paddlers were Stamford Mayor David Martin and Darien First Selectman Jayme Stevenson.
"The turnout here, I think we had about 90 people. That's double what it was last year, so if we double this three or four more years, there's not going to be any room in the Sound," said the mayor.
Last year, the organization raised about $20,000. This year, their goal was to raise $25,000.
