2 seriously hurt in LIE crash
Two people were seriously hurt in a crash that shut down lanes on the Long Island Expressway early Saturday morning.
The incident happened in the eastbound lanes near Exit 53 in Brentwood around 5:30 a.m.
Police say two men were heading east in a 2004 Nissan vehicle when their car was struck from behind by a 2003 Lincoln.
The Nissan lost control and flipped over before coming to rest upside-down on the guardrail of the roadway. The two occupants of that vehicle have been identified as 44-year-old Luis Espinali, of Coram, and 42-year-old Jose Paulino, of Central Islip. Espinali was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, and Paulino was taken by police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital, according to police.
The driver of the Lincoln, identified as 28-year-old Fauso Narvaez, of Shirley, was not hurt.
No charges have been filed at this time and both vehicles involved in the crash were impounded for safety checks.
Eastbound lanes were shut down on the highway as police investigated. All lanes have since been reopened.
Police are asking anyone with information on the crash to call Fourth Squad detectives at 631-854-8452.
