Two pilots killed when a small plane crashed in rural Burlington County were on a medical flight to pick up a patient in Massachusetts for care in Philadelphia.

Pilot Robert Winner, of Marlton, and co-pilot Timothy Scannevin, of Southampton, were pronounced dead shortly after the Hawker Beechcraft 58 Baron aircraft went down Wednesday in Springfield Township.

Ellen Williams, executive director of Angel Flight, tells NJ.com that Winner was a volunteer with the program that provides free flights to patients needing care at distant medical facilities.

She says Scannevin was not affiliated with Angel Flight East.

The plane had taken off earlier Wednesday about 10 miles southwest of the crash scene.

The National Transportation Safety Board says no distress call was made before the crash.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
