139th-annual Memorial Day Parade marches through Hempstead Village

The village’s parade first took place in 1886, making it Long Island’s oldest Memorial Day parade.

The Village of Hempstead hosted its 139th annual Memorial Day Parade on Sunday afternoon.
Marchers in the parade began at Legion Square and headed to Greenfield Cemetery where a ceremony to honor fallen heroes was held at the Civil War Monument.
Organizers say hundreds of people attended the event.
The village’s parade first took place in 1886, making it Long Island’s oldest Memorial Day parade.
