Organizers say around 1,000 people attended the Walk and Roll for Wishes event in Monroe Township Sunday.
Michael Dominik, the communications director of Make-a-Wish New Jersey, says the goal for the event is to create wishes for children with life-threatening illnesses and to raise the funds for them.
The event was held at the Make-a-Wish Foundation castle.
Riley Cartly, 15, always wanted to be a police officer. He suffers from epilepsy with uncontrollable seizures, requiring him to have surgery to correct it. Complications with the surgery paralyzed the left side of his body, making it challenging for him to achieve his dream -- until Make-a-Wish New Jersey granted his wish of becoming a Las Vegas Police officer.
"After the Las Vegas shooting that's all he talked about, 'Mom, did you see the videos? Mom did you see what they did? They were pulling people out and they were protecting people, that's who I want to be. I want to be a cop,'" said his mother Jennifer Cartly.
Riley Cartly wore his police uniform as he led nearly 1,000 people in the eighth annual event.
Nearly 600 wishes have been granted so far this year in New Jersey and 11,000 in its 36-year history.
Sunday's even raised more than $100,000. Combined with the September Walk and Roll for Wishes event, Make-a-Wish New Jersey raised $150,000.
