It’s been nearly a year since 14-year-olds Ethan Falkowitz and Drew Hassenbein died in a wrong-way car crash in Jericho.

Ethan’s father, Gary, is pushing for Gov. Kathy Hochul to sign the Grieving Families Act, which would allow family members to seek damages for grief and suffering caused by a loved one’s death.

Currently, families can only seek to recover financial losses, such as lost wages or future earnings.

Gov. Hochul vetoed the bill twice – citing concerns over rising insurance premiums and financial risk to health care facilities. She has said the state’s wrongful death statute does need to be updated. The bill is expected to be brought up again this legislative session, with a spokesman for the governor saying she will review any bill that passes both houses of the state Legislature.
